Klinisch toepassingsgebied:
Reticulocyten zijn de directe voorlopers van de rode bloedcellen. Een reticulocyt heeft in het cytoplasma nog ribonucleinezuur aanwezig (in tegenstelling tot de rijpere rbc) maar beschikt niet meer over een celkern (in tegenstelling tot de minder rijpe erytroblast).
Bepaling van het reticulocytenaantal is aangewezen bij het diagnosticeren en opvolgen van anemie. Een anemie met een goed reticulocytenantwoord, duidend op een compensatoir gestimuleerde erytroporese (vb. na acuut bloedverlies of hemolyse), kan zo onderscheiden worden van anemie zonder voldoende reticulocytenantwoord (vb. bij beenmergziekte).
